How to Stand Out Online as a Small Business

(Without Repainting Yourself Every Six Months)

There’s a Ray White building near me. The top half used to be painted bright yellow.

On grey Melbourne days, you couldn’t miss it. Even on those blue-sky days, it stood out. It was bold. It was unmistakable.

Then a couple of years ago, they painted it grey. Almost the same shade as the sky.

I still think they made a colossal error.

They used to be impossible to ignore. That yellow made them top of mind whenever I thought of real estate.

Now?

They blend in.

And it got me thinking about the online world.

Have I done the same thing?

Have I slowly painted myself a digital grey?

As small business owners, we say we want to stand out. We say we don’t want to feel invisible.

But then we repaint.

New niche.
New messaging.
New offer.
New direction.

Six months later — repaint again.

So guilty of this, more times then I care to admit.

The yellow building didn’t stand out because it was subtle.

It was loud.

It didn’t whisper.
It didn’t try to match the sky.
It didn’t tone itself down to fit in.

It stood out because it was unapologetically yellow.

And here’s the unsexy truth:

Most businesses don’t struggle because they aren’t different enough.

They struggle because they don’t stay consistent long enough to be recognised.

Repetition builds recognition.
Recognition builds trust.
Trust builds business.

We get bored of our own message long before our audience even remembers it.

So we pivot.
We tweak.
We “refresh.”

But maybe the problem isn’t that we’re invisible.

Maybe the problem is we keep repainting.

So How Do You Actually Stand Out Online?

Not with louder graphics.
Not with more reels.
Not with another rebrand.

You stand out by choosing — and committing.

Here’s what that really looks like.

1. Choose a clear belief and stand by it.

What do you actually believe about your industry?

Not what sounds good.
Not what everyone else says.
Not what feels safe.

What do you believe people are getting wrong?
What do you believe truly makes the difference?

When you anchor yourself to a belief, your content stops feeling random. You’re no longer chasing ideas, you’re reinforcing a point of view.

People don’t remember services.

They remember conviction.

And the businesses that stand out are the ones who are known for something.

2. Decide who you’re really speaking to.

“Small business owners” is too broad to connect with anyone.

Are you speaking to someone just starting and overwhelmed?
Someone established but frustrated?
Someone capable but invisible?
Someone ready to grow but unsure what to fix first?

When you name the stage, your message sharpens.

Specific language makes people feel seen.

And when someone feels seen, they pay attention.

3. Share how you think, not just what you produce.

Most people only show outcomes.

The finished result.
The polished version.
The highlight reel.

But what makes you different isn’t just what you deliver, it’s how you think.

Why did you make that decision?
Why did you remove something instead of adding more?
Why do you believe clarity beats complexity?

When people understand your thinking, they trust your expertise.

Your perspective is what makes you recognisable.

4. Stop diluting your message to sound “professional.”

Vague sounds safe.

But safe sounds like everyone else.

Professional doesn’t mean neutral.
It doesn’t mean corporate.
It doesn’t mean invisible.

Clear language builds authority.
Strong opinions build memorability.

If you believe something, say it plainly.

The right people won’t be put off.

They’ll lean in.

5. Stay consistent long enough for it to mean something.

This is the part no one glamorises.

Standing out isn’t built in a burst of energy. It’s built in repetition.

Visibility isn’t a spike.
It’s a compound effect.

You will get bored of your message before your audience even registers it.

Don’t repaint just because you’re restless.

The yellow building didn’t change every season.

It stayed yellow long enough to be remembered.

Standing out online isn’t about becoming louder than everyone else.

It’s about becoming recognisable.

Choosing your colour.
Owning your belief.
Showing up consistently.
And having the courage to stay there.

Because what feels loud to you often just feels clear to everyone else.

And clarity — repeated long enough is what makes a small business impossible to ignore.
